Elijah Loveday was the son of Thomas and Sophia Loveday of Stratton, Wiltshire, England. He married Sarah Spearing the daughter of William Spearing and L Esther, nee Draper of Witney, Oxford, England.

The IGI records for the British Isles, Batch Number: 914132 indicates there were three children born to Elijah and Sarah Loveday. All three were christened at Stratton Saint Margaret, Wiltshire, England.


Selina LOVEDAY christened on the 5th October 1845
Thomas LOVEDAY christened on the 24th November 1843
Alice LOVEDAY christened on the 13th January 1847
Selina LOVEDAY died on the 9th April 1848




Elijah and Sarah Loveday sailed on the "St Vincent" with their two young children, Thomas Albert, then four years of age and Alice aged two years. They sailed from England, arriving in Sydney on the 13th March, 1849.

The family eventually settled in Glen Innes, in the New England area of Northern New South Wales. Elijah was the licencee of the "Golden Fleece Inn" at Severn, now known as Dundee, from approximately 1857 to 1860.




Elijah Loveday died on the 21st September, 1875, at the age of 59 years, and is buried in the Glen Innes cemetery beside his wife, Sarah, who at the age of 49 years died on the 4th March, 1873. Their graves were beautifully restored about 1966 by the Grand Lodge.



SMITH FAMILY

Alice LOVEDAY married Lawrence John SMITH, registered at Wellingrove, NSW on the 13 February 1863. Witness to their marriage were Thomas Loveday & Catherine McDonald. Alice was residing at Dundee at this time and would have been about 17 years old.

Lawrence John SMITH was born in 1837 at Great Marlow, Buckinghamshire, England.
Alice & Lawrence had a daughter Alice Georgina, born 2nd December, 1862 and who died on the 1st July, 1867 aged four & a half years old. She is buried in the Roman Catholic Section, Row A, Plot 21 of the Glen Innes cemetery.

They returned to England between 1868 and 1870.
